I am a person with 30+ years experience in the computer fields, starting as a programmer at a small market data firm supporting Options trading. I rapidly expanded into data communications, server maintenance (my passion at the time) and many other areas of the company including customer support, sales technical support, and even air conditioner and power maintenance. Later my company was absorbed into a larger market data firm and I spent several years there in server operations moving up to management. As the key person in the firm who liaisoned with data providers for technical implemetation from the various exchanges I learned many different protocols and became accomplished with designing redundant hardware and independent data paths to provide resiliancy and security. I introduced firewalls and security practices to our companies and worked closely with the developers to design code requirements for proper security from the start much like DevSecOps. As the Operations Manager I attended Developer planning meetings and provided feedback to keep the products effective in the production environment, as well as identifying gaps in security and operations during the planning and build phases.
Throughout my career I have taken the initiative to expand my responsibilities whenever I've seen a need, introducing security practices and working with developers to create some early Intrusion Detection Systems on our Windows based systems. I often work closely with other departments to solve their technical problems. Auditor and Regulator requests often came across my desk, leading me to locate or generate documentation as needed to satisfy their requirements. Often I would use these experiences to learn more about the requirements and expand our companies policies, processes, and procedures to match not only the current, but the predicted future. This allowed us to be more prepared and professional as we progressed as a company.
When the Sarbannes-Oxley legislation passed my skillset led me to being appointed the Corporate Information Security Officer for our suite of companies that included an On-line Brokerage and an affiliated Electronic Communication Network. I wrote all the policy documentation and the process documentation. I also of course worked to validate the process and procedures worked and were followed accordingly.
Other responsiblities I took on extended my operations management to project management as I designed a backup site for our critical ticker plant, and later worked to design and oversee the creation of a 60 desk customer service office.
I've worked on everything from teletypes to Next Gen Firewalls and always want to dive into learning new technologies and equipment. I consider myself and "Evolutionary Technologist" who studies how the past enables the present and future of technology. For example I study how computers have evolved from the concepts of Babbage to the quantum computers being built today. I have interests in the history of crypography and counter-crypto. My personal life involves studying new developments in several different branches of science from technology to paleontology, but my passion is the history of assisted aircrew egress. This is a field that mostly centers on ejection seats, but there is much more to it than that. I work with the local library as a volunteer to man the 3D print room as an educator teaching how to design, operate, and maintain various 3D printers and have a couple of my own at home. I have taught classes to children as young as six years old and trained adults as well.
need to add skills including pattern recognition...
